We had some brilliant employees in the company. They came, learnt some more & went out. In contrast, we have people who may not be brilliant but are hardworking & loyal. Their loyalty gave the company strength specially when chips were down. During times of difficulty some even refused to take their legitimate pay raise, many deferred their other benefits. They have been the greatest strength for company, their continuity has given strength to our foundation.

One more thing. In a venture, there is no place for rumor managers. I have seen employees who may be brilliant or below average sometimes exhibit similar traits. Both feel disappointed & try to fill their ego through rumors & dooms day predictions. In contrast, the ones who are reasonably talented but loyal create the positivity a venture badly requires. I have an employee who joined 15 years ago, straight from collage. He handles one of the most important pillars, but without him we may not have been alive.

Last, many employees come with the background of having worked in large companies including multinationals. Many of them join small ventures as they may not be getting enough growth opportunities & freedom. Unfortunately, as they get in they unconsciously begin creating the large company culture; working only to rule & passing the buck. It is not that one should not take people from large companies, one has to be conscious they blend into a small company culture where taking complete ownership & going beyond KRAs is important.
